Rooted in Care: An Ecofeminist Reading of Gender, Science, and Nature in Hope Jahren's Lab Girl
Life writing is a place where the intersection between gender, science and nature can be explored in the context of lived experiences, and this is the theme explored by ecofeminist criticism and environmental humanities, but scientific memoirs have not yet been studied in this way. In response to this, this article will examine Hope Jahren's Lab Girl (2016) from an ecofeminist perspective. The study examines how Jahren depicts nature as an ethical partner, science as an act of care and plants as active agents through the lens of qualitative text analysis and the theories of Karen Warren, a critique of human–nature dualism and Carolyn Merchant on the nature of gendered scientific objectivity. It is concluded that Lab Girl breaks with the traditional, patriarchal, scientific perspective and is a legacy to the ecofeminist scholarship by offering a scientific memoir of ecological care and interconnectedness.
